TAKING APART (ASILO SANT’ELIA)
ARCHITECTURAL ANALYSIS, RISD PROFESSOR LEXI TSIEN
The project intends to explore the transparency of the interior and exterior spaces in Giuseppe Terragni’s Asilo Sant’Elia. The architecture was studied through hand drafting and digital modeling and interpreted by axonometric drawings and perspective drawings. Through the act of taking part, I was able to understand better the relationships between various constituents of the architecture. With this analysis, I created representations of the architectural experience using overlapping perspectives with only vertical lines that highlight the different densities of materials.
The drawing is created by overlapping 11 different perspective views taken from a child’s’ point of view, creating a panoramic representation. Using only vertical lines allows me to indicate the different materials by changing the density of lines, allowing me to highlight the transparency of the building.
The entrance of the structure is the most alluring moment. It demonstrates the idea of transparency between the interior and exterior spaces. The language of vertical lines is maintained to highlight the windows and columns, which are critical to dividing the spaces. The three overlying perspectives show the experience of moving around the exterior courtyard. The relationship of opacity is also inverted in the drawing to show the idea of openness.
