ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN, RISD PROFESSOR BEN PELL
This project investigates the development of a stacking system that is capable of creating two distinct spatial conditions and hence two studios for a photographer and a sculptor. Inspired by the idea of merging interior and exterior spaces, the stacking system allowed me to create an interesting form while making different qualities of spaces, circulation, structures, enclosures and openings.
Inspired by a system of stacking stairs that creates an interesting form and making different qualities of spaces, circulation, structures, enclosures, and openings, the project was explored through model making.
The sculptor requires ample space and natural light to create such a large-scale artwork. Conversely, the photographer needs enclosed spaces to process prints & control the lighting. The shared spaces for both artists are designed with voids and openings, derived from layering and stacking, to inspire skylight into the spaces.
